Devising a Strategy for a US Defense Company to Establish a Marketplace Presence for Its Advanced Suite of Technology Tools to Help the Firefighting Community Deal with Growing Wildfire Risks

Background

  • A large US defense company in 2022 asked Capstone to evaluate the policy and regulatory environment for technology that supports wildfire prediction and mitigation.
  • Capstone was hired to provide the Company with an informed view of customer needs and procurement requirements and to build out a complementary strategic engagement strategy for its public sector-focused products and services.

Process

  • During the seven-week engagement, Capstone held discussions with 56 federal, state, and local government stakeholders and identified tactical and strategic opportunities.
  • Capstone reviewed federal government funding mechanisms and potential sources of funding, including the US Department of the Interior, US Department of Energy, US Department of Agriculture, US Department of Homeland Security, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to determine their priorities and preferences.
  • In addition, Capstone conducted a deep dive on three US firefighting ecosystems to determine how they budget for and procure multiyear govtech contracts and provided a breakdown of budgets and funding sources.

Outcomes

  • Capstone recommended using technology to bring the expansive interagency landscape into focus, set up firmer long-term contracts for aircraft owners, demonstrating for utilities the benefits of adopting predictive measures, and highlighting the Company’s ability to enhance communications in remote areas.
  • The Company established its own marketplace and advanced its vision of wildfire fighting to reduce the time it takes to gather information and speed decision-making.
  • The Company was able to successfully position itself to help first responders find better tools to do their jobs.
