Capstone believes European countries will continue to support biomethane (renewable natural gas, or RNG) production, driving further growth in output. In many countries, support is gradually shifting from direct subsidies toward blending obligations. While the European biomethane market remains highly fragmented, harmonisation is steadily progressing.

  • Why it matters: The expansion of blending obligations across Europe is expected to increase both demand for, and the value of, biomethane Guarantees of Origin (GOs) and Proofs of Sustainability (PoS). Over the past five years, biomethane prices and project revenues have varied significantly across European countries and end markets. As the market becomes more integrated, comparing opportunities across countries will become increasingly important to maximise revenue stacking and optimise costs in the European competitive landscape.
  • What you’ll find here: A high-level, interactive overview of the biomethane landscape in key European countries, covering production, blending mandate progress, and the main opportunities and risks in each market. You can rank and compare markets side by side, and open a one-page summary for any country, or for several markets together. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you’d like to discuss a specific country in more detail.
